Style Them Like A Pro

Bookcases aren’t just for libraries! These versatile pieces can be called into service to do double duty as both book storage and display shelves for your favorite knickknacks and collectibles. Here are some tips to add some style to your bookcase.

KEEP IT BALANCED

It’s easy to get too focused on the details when you begin styling. Stop to look at the big picture by stepping back every so often to see the overall balance of your arrangement.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

To achieve a bookcase worthy of a magazine photo, resist the urge for too much clutter. Too many accessories on each shelf will result in a bookcase that looks messy and busy rather than stylish. Achieve a clean look with vases or figurines that have a similar color or hue, but a mix of shapes and textures.

KEEP IT ARRANGED

If you’re not sure where to begin, don’t focus on the bookcase as a whole, but work on a few small sections to kickstart your creativity. Place items off-center, or try larger or smaller bundle arrangements until you like what you see.

KEEP IT VARIED

To add some extra interest, stack collections of books both horizontally and vertically. Arrange some books with the pages out, and others with the spines out. Shake it up!

KEEP IT SYMMETRICAL

If you have two separate bookcases, you can tie the look together by organizing them with a cohesive feel. Gather a wide variety of collectibles and place them with a loose symmetry between your existing books and plants.

KEEP IT SUPPORTED

Don’t forget the power of bookends. Use heavy, sturdy décor items as bookends to keep shelves neat.

KEEP IT STAGGERED

One of our favorite styling choices is a staggered arrangement, which helps with the overall balance of the bookcase. A rotating zig-zag arrangement of the same item helps to create an easy flow. For example, if you have three shelves, place three larger items in a zig-zag pattern down the bookcase. Shelf one has a stack of books on the right, shelf two has a stack of books on the left, and shelf three has a stack of books on the right. Repeat and fill in with smaller items.

KEEP IT LAYERED

If you have a deeper-set bookcase, don’t hesitate to use the whole shelf. Give it some dimension by adding multiple layers — lean a picture frame or your favorite piece of art behind some smaller items.

Practice with these tips and you'll be styling your bookshelves like a pro!
